Generators on the East Rand

Ekurhuleni joined nine East Rand towns into one metro: Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Edenvale, Germiston, Kempton Park, Nigel and Springs, with the townships around them. Most of those towns grew up along the gold reef, and as the mines closed, engineering works, foundries, factories and warehouses took their place. O.R. Tambo International Airport sits between Kempton Park, Boksburg and Benoni, ringed by freight, cold-chain and hospitality businesses that never really close.

Generators here cover load shedding and the outages nobody schedules, from substation faults and cable theft to summer storm damage. Those give no warning and can outlast any scheduled slot.

So an East Rand generator needs a battery and charger that start it first time without notice, fuel for a long run, and a changeover that transfers cleanly both ways. Industrial sites add complexity: several sets sharing load through a synchronising panel, bulk tanks feeding day tanks, and controllers reporting to a building management system.

Industrial and commercial sites

Standby power that has to start every time

A factory or warehouse set may stand idle for weeks, then have to carry the whole site without warning. What lets it down is seldom the engine: more often a tired battery, a charger that failed quietly, a filter blocked by tank sediment, or a changeover nobody has operated since the last outage.

A maintenance plan catches those in advance: services by hours and date, test runs with the changeover operated, and a record of each visit. Sets that only ever run lightly loaded benefit from a load bank test, which proves them at full output and helps clear the carbon light running leaves behind.

A bulk tank that is topped up but never emptied also collects water and sludge near the pickup; the diesel contamination guide explains the signs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which parts of Ekurhuleni do you cover?

The whole metro, on site, including the townships, industrial areas and smallholdings. The table above links the seven towns with their own page; Bedfordview, Brakpan, Tembisa, Nigel and the places between are covered too.

Do you work in industrial areas such as Isando, Jet Park and Wadeville?

Yes, from a single standby set to several sharing a synchronising panel. A list of the sets on site, with the make, kVA and hour-meter reading of each, lets us plan the visit, and your safety officer can tell us what the induction requires. See industrial generator services.

Does it matter whether my power comes from the City of Ekurhuleni or from Eskom?

Most of the metro is supplied by the City of Ekurhuleni, which buys bulk power from Eskom, and some properties buy directly from Eskom; your account shows which. It decides your load-shedding schedule, but unplanned outages happen under either, so the set should be ready to start at any time.

Can you look after generators at several of our East Rand sites?

Yes. Each set gets its own schedule based on how it is used, and visits to nearby sites can be booked together. We Service & Repair All Generator Brands, so a mix of makes across your sites is not a problem.

What happens when we call about a generator that has failed?

We ask for the make, the kVA and what the controller screen shows, so the technician arrives with the likely parts. We arrive within 1–2 hours, usually within 1 hour. Free callouts and quotations: the fault is diagnosed on site and quoted, and nothing is repaired until you agree. Generator repairs explains the visit, and generator servicing what a routine service covers.
