Gold-reef towns and open country
The West Rand is two places in one. Along the gold reef in the south lie the mining towns: Krugersdorp, Randfontein and Westonaria, and further west Carletonville and Fochville in Merafong, where deep-level gold mines still work. North and west of Krugersdorp the country opens up into the farms, smallholdings, lodges and venues of Muldersdrift, the Cradle of Humankind, Magaliesburg and Hekpoort.
That split shapes the generators we work on. In the towns they are much like those anywhere in Gauteng: silent diesel standby sets behind homes and shops, three-phase sets at workshops and factories, and portable petrol and inverter units. Out of town, a generator is often all that stands between a farm or venue and a long wait for a rural line to be repaired, and it may run a borehole pump, cold rooms and a kitchen as well as the lights.
Power cuts come from load shedding and from faults nobody schedules: storm damage to overhead lines, cable and transformer theft, and substation failures. Rural feeders can take longer to restore than town networks, so a set out of town may be asked to run for many hours at a stretch, and its fuel, cooling and oil need to be in good order before that happens.

Where West Rand generators earn their keep
Wedding and conference venues: Commercial generator services
Muldersdrift and the Magaliesberg foothills are known for their venues. A set has to pick up kitchens, sound and lighting in the middle of an event without tripping, so it should be proven under real load before the season starts.
Lodges and guest houses: Standby generators
Around the Cradle of Humankind and Magaliesburg, guests expect hot water, Wi-Fi and lights. Sets may stand well away from the buildings, on long cable runs that add voltage drop.
Farms and agricultural holdings: kVA sizing guide
Borehole pumps, irrigation, poultry houses and cold rooms. A submersible pump draws several times its running current as it starts, and the set has to be sized for that moment.
Engineering and mine suppliers: Industrial generator services
Workshops in Randfontein, Krugersdorp and the Merafong towns run compressors, welders and machine tools on three-phase sets that take heavy motor-starting loads.
Homes and estates: Residential generator services
Silent diesel standby with automatic changeover in Krugersdorp’s suburbs and estates, and inverter and petrol units in homes across the district.
Kagiso, Mohlakeng, Bekkersdal and Khutsong: Portable and inverter generators
Petrol and inverter generators keep homes, spaza shops, salons and car washes going, where a carburettor, AVR or inverter fault means lost trade.
Farms, lodges and plots
When the generator is a long way from town
On a farm or at a lodge the generator is often out of sight: in a pump house, behind a shed or at the far end of a long cable. It may stand unused for weeks and then have to run for hours. What stops it is usually something that built up quietly: a battery left to discharge, diesel that picked up water in a drum or tank, rodents in the wiring, insects nesting in the air intake, or dust packed into the radiator fins.
Getting it right on the first visit matters more out here. When you book, send a location pin and gate or access instructions, the make, model and kVA if you know them, the hour-meter reading and a photo of the controller screen or nameplate. Our guide to preparing for a technician visit lists what else helps.
A maintenance plan suits sets that stand idle between outages: regular test runs with load, battery and charger checks, and fuel inspections, so the set is ready when the line goes down. When one fails mid-outage, book an emergency repair.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do you cover Westonaria, Carletonville and Muldersdrift as well as Krugersdorp and Randfontein?
Yes. We work on site across the whole West Rand District: Mogale City, Rand West City and Merafong, including the townships, agricultural holdings and farms. Krugersdorp and Randfontein have their own pages listing the suburbs we cover.
We run a wedding venue in Muldersdrift. How do we make sure the generator works on the day?
Have it serviced before your busy season, then test it with the venue load on it rather than just starting it, so the changeover, AVR and cooling are proven together. Check that the fuel covers your longest event with a margin. A maintenance plan builds these load tests in.
Our farm generator only runs a few times a year. What should we do between runs?
Run it regularly with some load on it rather than leaving it to idle, keep the battery charged, keep the tank full to limit condensation, and have water drained from the fuel water separator at each service. Service it by date as well as by hours, because oil, coolant and diesel age even when the engine does not run.
Can you work on generators at mine-related and industrial sites?
Yes. Tell us what the site requires, such as inductions, permits to work, PPE or an escort, when you book, and we plan the visit around it and around production. See industrial generator services.
Is the callout free, and which brands do you work on?
Free callouts and quotations, and work starts only once you have accepted the quotation. We Service & Repair All Generator Brands, from small petrol units to large three-phase diesel sets.
