Randfontein Generator Repairs for Industry, Homes and Holdings

We repair, service and maintain generators on site in Randfontein, the gold-mining town at the heart of Rand West City. We work on three-phase sets at factories and workshops in Aureus, standby sets at shops and homes in the town centre, Greenhills, Homelake and Randgate, petrol and inverter units in Mohlakeng, and borehole generators on the agricultural holdings around town.

A town that grew up around a gold mine

Randfontein was founded in 1890 to serve the Randfontein Estates gold mine, and mining has never entirely left: gold is still worked in the area, and uranium has been recovered from the gold ore. Since 2016 the town has been part of Rand West City, together with Westonaria.

Alongside the mines there are engineering works, food processing and textile manufacturing, with much of the industry in Aureus, and a town centre that serves the plots and farms around it. That makes Randfontein a working town where generators tend to have harder jobs than in a typical suburb: bigger motor loads, more dust and longer runs when the power stays off.

Randfontein’s generators, area by area

The generators change from one part of town to the next, and so do the things that make them fail.

Mine dust and dirt roads: keeping a set breathing

Mine dumps, unpaved plot roads and the dry, windy weeks at the end of winter put a lot of fine dust in the air around Randfontein. Dust is hard on a generator because it blocks the air the engine breathes and the air that cools it. On a dusty site, these are the points we check at a service:

  • The air filter element and housing. A choked filter costs power and causes black smoke; a split element or loose clamp lets dust straight into the engine.
  • Radiator and intercooler fins. Packed dust raises the running temperature until the set shuts down on high temperature; see overheating.
  • Canopy louvres, intake screens and door seals, so cooling air passes through the radiator and not around it.
  • The alternator’s air path and windings, where dust mixed with moisture tracks across the insulation and lowers its resistance.
  • Fuel filler caps, tank breathers and the water separator, so dust and water stay out of the diesel.
  • Controller and panel seals, relay contacts and cable glands.

Owners can safely check the air filter restriction indicator, where one is fitted, and keep the area around the canopy clear of rubbish and long grass. Cleaning radiators and opening up the alternator are jobs for a technician, with the set isolated.

Plots and smallholdings

Generators on the agricultural holdings

The plots around Randfontein rely on generators for more than lights. A borehole pump, a pressure pump, poultry heating and a cold room may all run from the same set, and the borehole pump is usually the hardest of them: a submersible motor draws several times its running current for a moment as it starts, and if the set stands a long way from the borehole, the cable adds voltage drop on top.

If the lights dip hard or the set trips each time the pump starts, the set may be too small for the starting load, the governor or AVR may be slow to recover, or the cable may be undersized. We test the set and look at the load before recommending a repair, a change to the pump starter by your pump installer, or a larger set. Our kVA sizing guide shows how a pump’s starting load is worked out.

Randfontein, Krugersdorp and Westonaria

Randfontein sits between Krugersdorp to the north-east and Westonaria to the south, and we work across all three and the rest of the West Rand. Krugersdorp is the larger regional centre, with more estates and offices; work in Randfontein leans towards industry, mining-related businesses and the holdings.

Whatever the site, the next step is the same: a repair when a set has failed, a service when it is due by hours or by date, and a maintenance plan for a set that must not let you down.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you work at factories and workshops in Aureus?

Yes, from single workshop sets to larger standby installations. Tell us about access times, inductions or permits when you book, and we plan the visit around shifts. See industrial generator services.

Our generator keeps overheating on hot, dusty days. Why?

Most often the radiator fins are packed with dust, so air cannot carry the heat away. Low coolant, a slipping fan belt, a sticking thermostat or running the set above its rating do the same. Stop using it until it is checked, because repeated high-temperature shutdowns can damage the engine. See overheating.

Do you repair petrol and inverter generators in Mohlakeng?

Yes. Starting problems, surging, no output and damaged sockets are the usual faults, and many are repaired on site. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you before going ahead.

We are on an agricultural holding outside town. Do you come out?

Yes. Send a location pin and directions when you book, with the make, model and kVA of the set if you know them and a photo of the controller screen or nameplate.

Which areas around Randfontein do you cover?

All of Randfontein, from Aureus and the town centre to Greenhills, Homelake, Mohlakeng and the holdings, and on to Westonaria and Krugersdorp. Free callouts and quotations, and no work starts until you have approved the quotation.
