Sandton Generator Repairs for Towers, Hotels and Homes
We repair, service and maintain generators across Sandton, from the large standby systems in CBD office towers and hotels, often several sets running in parallel, to home standby sets in Bryanston, Morningside and Sandhurst. Work in occupied buildings is planned with building management and can be done after hours, and for a breakdown we normally arrive within 1–2 hours.

Generators in Sandton
Office towers in the CBD: Control panel repairs
Large standby systems, often several sets paralleled on a common busbar, linked to the building management and fire systems, with priority schemes that drop non-essential circuits when capacity runs short.
Hotels and conference venues: ATS and changeover problems
Sites that trade through the night, where a failed changeover is noticed by guests at once and tests have to be timed around events and check-ins.
Data rooms and server rooms: Standby generators
A UPS bridges the gap when the mains fails, so the generator must start, settle and take the load before the UPS batteries run down.
Business parks: Commercial generator services
Sets in Rivonia, Sunninghill and Woodmead shared between tenants or owned by the landlord, where it must be clear who pays for servicing, fuel and repairs.
Medical rooms: Voltage problems
Consulting rooms and day clinics in Morningside and Sunninghill that need stable voltage for equipment, refrigeration for medicines and power for patient records.
Large homes: Residential generator services
Silent diesel and gas standby sets with automatic changeovers in Bryanston, Morningside, Sandhurst and Inanda.

Commercial buildings
Working in Sandton buildings
In Sandton’s towers and hotels the generators usually sit in basement plant rooms, on parking levels or on rooftops, behind several layers of security; in the business parks they are more often in a caged enclosure beside the car park. Building management controls access and needs notice before any test that moves the building onto generator power, so we book the work early in the morning, in the evening or at weekends where the building needs it, and we leave the controller in automatic before we go.
Paralleled systems are serviced as a whole as well as set by set. Beyond each engine and alternator, we check that the sets synchronise cleanly, share the load evenly and open and close their breakers in the right order. A fault in the synchronising or load-sharing controls can stop the system taking the building’s load even when every engine is healthy. We diagnose and set up the controllers used on these systems, such as DSE and ComAp modules.
- Access, permits and inductions arranged through building management
- Load-transfer tests timed with the building
- Synchronising, load sharing and breaker control checked
- The set returned to automatic before we leave
Generators and UPS systems in data rooms
| Stage | What should happen | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Mains fails | What should happenThe UPS carries the load on battery, and the generator controller waits a few seconds to ignore brief dips | What we checkMains-sensing settings and the start delay, so the set neither starts on every flicker nor waits too long |
| Generator starts | What should happenThe engine cranks, fires and reaches rated speed and voltage | What we checkStart battery, battery charger, starter motor, fuel supply and, where fitted, the block heater |
| Load transfers | What should happenThe changeover moves the UPS and the other essential loads onto the generator | What we checkATS or breaker operation, interlocks and transfer timing |
| UPS accepts the supply | What should happenThe UPS sees steady voltage and frequency, leaves battery mode and starts recharging | What we checkGovernor stability and AVR response under the UPS rectifier load; a set that hunts can be rejected and leave the UPS on battery |
| Mains returns | What should happenThe load transfers back and the set runs unloaded to cool down before it stops | What we checkReturn delay, cool-down timer, and that the set goes back to automatic |
A generator feeding a large UPS often needs more capacity than the UPS rating alone suggests, because rectifier loads distort the current waveform. If the UPS alarms or stays on battery when the generator takes over, see frequency and speed problems.
Home standby in Bryanston, Morningside and Sandhurst
Sandton’s larger homes often have a fixed standby set rather than a portable unit: a silent diesel, or a gas set fed from LPG cylinders or a bulk tank, wired through an automatic changeover so the house switches over without anyone going outside. The loads include borehole and pool pumps, electric gates, security systems, kitchens and sometimes air conditioning. Pumps draw several times their running current as they start, a common reason a set that looks big enough trips when the borehole kicks in. Our kVA sizing guide shows how to allow for it.
Even on a large stand a generator can be heard next door, and many estates and residents’ associations set rules about noise and running times, so canopy seals, the silencer and the direction of the exhaust matter as much as the engine. Some homes have air-cooled gas standby units, which need different care from a diesel: spark plugs, valve clearances and a check of the gas pressure at the set rather than injectors and fuel filters. Work on the gas supply itself, from the cylinders or tank to the generator, is for a registered gas installer. See gas generators and home generator services.
Keeping a Sandton generator ready for the next outage
Power in Sandton comes from the municipal supply or from Eskom, depending on the suburb, so load-shedding times are not the same across the area. Scheduled cuts are only part of it: cable theft, substation faults and storm damage can leave a building on generator power for far longer than a load-shedding slot, and that is when a set with a tired battery, dirty fuel or a blocked radiator lets go.
A generator service deals with the wear items, and a maintenance plan adds regular test runs under load so problems show up on a quiet day rather than mid-outage. If the set has already failed, our generator repairs page explains how we find the fault. We also work in neighbouring Randburg, Fourways and Midrand, and across the rest of Johannesburg.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can you service the generator in our Sandton office building after hours?
Yes. We work 24/7, so servicing and load-transfer tests can be done before or after business hours or at weekends, by arrangement with building management.
Our building has two generators that run together. Can you work on them?
Yes. Paralleled sets are checked as a system: synchronising, load sharing and breaker control, as well as each engine and alternator. Tell us the controller make when you book, if you know it.
Our UPS alarms whenever the generator takes over. Is the generator at fault?
Often it is the combination. If the generator’s frequency or voltage wanders, which points to the governor, the fuel supply or the AVR, the UPS can reject the supply and stay on battery. We test the set’s stability under the UPS load and can work through the UPS input settings with your IT team or UPS supplier.
Do you work on home standby generators in Bryanston and Morningside?
Yes: silent diesel and gas sets, automatic changeovers, battery chargers and controllers. See home generator services.
Do you cover Alexandra and the eastern side of Sandton?
Yes: Alexandra, the Wynberg and Marlboro industrial areas, Wendywood and Gallo Manor, as well as the CBD, Bryanston, Rivonia, Sunninghill and Woodmead. We come to the generator, wherever it is.
