Generators in Roodepoort

Roodepoort began as a gold-mining town and now mixes old and new: established suburbs around the old centre, newer estates to the west and north, office nodes and pockets of light industry. The generators change from one part to the next.

Storm season

Lightning nearby: what to do before the next outage

Summer thunderstorms over Roodepoort’s ridges bring lightning, and a surge can travel in along the mains, the changeover wiring and the controller’s sensing cables. The damage often stays hidden until the next power cut. After a strike close by:
  1. 01

    Look, without opening anything

Check the controller screen and warning lights from outside the canopy. A blank screen, a tripped breaker or a smell of burning means it is time to call us.

  2. 02

    Do not keep resetting alarms

Repeated resets and start attempts can turn a small fault into a bigger one. Note what the screen shows, or take a photo of it.

  3. 03

    Note what else failed

Gate motors, alarm panels, borehole controllers or appliances that died in the same storm show the route the surge took.

  4. 04

    Have the set tested

We test the controller, AVR, battery charger and changeover, check the alternator windings’ insulation and the earthing, and quote for each damaged part before repairing it.

Estate rules and contractor access

Much of Roodepoort’s newer housing is inside security estates and complexes, especially in Wilgeheuwel, Little Falls, Ruimsig and Honeydew. Contractor access is usually by appointment, with the resident or managing agent confirming the visit at the gate, and many estates set rules about generator noise, running times and where a set may stand. Tell us the estate’s requirements when you book, so the technician is expected.

Noise rules make maintenance more important, not less. Perished canopy seals, a blowing silencer joint or a loose panel can make a set louder than the estate allows, and a set that only runs during outages hides its faults until it is needed. Estates and bodies corporate with generators for gates, guardhouses and clubhouses get the most from a maintenance plan, with services and test runs booked at times the rules allow. Lightning damage to controllers is covered on our control panel repairs and AVR repairs pages.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you work inside the estates in Wilgeheuwel, Ruimsig and Little Falls?

Yes. Let us know the estate’s contractor access arrangements and any rules on noise or working hours when you book, and we follow them.

Our generator stopped working after a thunderstorm. Can you fix it?

Usually. Lightning surges commonly damage controllers, AVRs and battery chargers. We test each part and quote for what needs repair. See control panel repairs.

Our smallholding generator struggles to start the borehole pump. Why?

Usually the set is too small for the pump’s starting current, the cable to the pump is long enough for the voltage to sag, or a tired governor or AVR recovers too slowly. We check the set and the load and tell you whether a repair, a soft starter fitted by your pump installer, or a larger set is the answer.

Our generator is louder than the estate allows. Can that be fixed?

Often. Noise rises when canopy seals and acoustic lining perish, a silencer or exhaust joint starts blowing, or a panel works loose, and we repair these during a service. A set in a poor position may also need moving.

Which areas around Roodepoort do you cover?
