Generator Repairs for Benoni Homes, Smallholdings and Industry

We repair, service and maintain generators on site across Benoni: standby sets at homes and estates in Farrarmere, Northmead, Lakefield and Rynfield, diesel sets running boreholes on the smallholdings, and larger sets in Apex and Benoni South. On a plot we test the cabling out to the pump as well as the generator, because that is often where the problem lies.

Benoni’s mix of homes, plots and industry

Benoni is known as the city of lakes, and its established suburbs, such as Farrarmere, Westdene, Northmead and Lakefield, are mostly family homes, with golf and lakeside estates nearby. Here the typical generator is a silent diesel standby set with an automatic changeover, or an inverter or petrol unit wheeled out when the power goes.

On the agricultural holdings of Benoni AH, Brentwood Park and Rynfield, water often comes from boreholes, so an outage stops the taps as well as the lights. Diesel sets under lean-tos or in well-ventilated pump houses keep the pump running, often feeding the house, stables and outbuildings from the same board.

Apex and Benoni South hold factories and workshops on three-phase industrial standby, while homes and small businesses in Actonville, Wattville, Daveyton and Etwatwa rely on petrol and inverter generators for fridges, lights and trading.

Long cable runs on smallholdings

On a plot, the generator often sits some distance from the borehole, the house and the outbuildings. Every metre of cable has resistance, so the voltage at the far end is lower than at the generator, and the loss grows with the current. It is worst at the very moment a pump motor starts and briefly draws several times its running current.

That is why a generator can show a healthy voltage at its own terminals while the pump at the far end hums, trips its overload or makes its contactor chatter. A bigger generator sometimes hides the problem but seldom solves it.

On a smallholding visit we measure voltage at the pump and the house while the pump starts, not only at the set, and look at cable size, joints and the changeover arrangement. If the cable is too small for the distance, that is the fix, and we explain what needs to change. Sizing matters too: the pump’s starting load, not its running load, decides how big the generator must be, as the example below shows. The kVA sizing guide walks through the sums.

Bar chart. Everyday loads of about 1.0 kW plus a 1.1 kW borehole pump give a running load of about 2.1 kW. While the pump starts, about 2.2 kW more is drawn, a peak of about 4.3 kW. A 3 kVA set supplies about 2.4 kW and a 6 kVA set about 4.8 kW, so a set of about 6 kVA is needed.
Sizing example: a 1.1 kW borehole pump plus everyday loads runs at about 2.1 kW, but its start pushes the peak to about 4.3 kW, so a set of about 6 kVA is needed.Open full size (opens in a new tab)

Homes and estates

Standby, estate rules and solar systems

  • Automatic standby: Standby generators

A home set starts itself when the mains fails, but only if the battery, charger and controller are healthy and the controller is left in auto. A short monthly test run catches many problems early.

  • Estate rules: Residential generator services

Many estates set rules for contractor access, noise and where a set may stand. Tell us the gate procedure when you book, and keep the exhaust pointing away from windows and neighbours.

  • Generators with solar: Voltage and frequency basics

A hybrid inverter only accepts generator power within set voltage and frequency limits. A set with loose speed control can be rejected, and the inverter’s charging current on top of the house load can overload a small one.

What to tell us when you book a plot visit

A few details let us arrive with the right parts and test equipment.

  • A location pin, the gate code or who will open, and whether dogs are loose.
  • What the generator powers: borehole pump, house, stables or irrigation.
  • The pump rating from its plate or paperwork, and whether it is single-phase or three-phase.
  • Roughly how far the generator stands from the pump and the house.
  • The make, model and kVA from the rating plate, the hour-meter reading and a photo of the controller.

Our guide to preparing for a technician visit shows where to find each plate.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you service generators on smallholdings around Benoni?

Yes, in Benoni AH, Brentwood Park and the plots around Rynfield. Free callouts and quotations. A generator service on a dusty plot pays special attention to the air filter and the diesel that has stood in the tank.

My borehole pump will not start on the generator, but the generator seems fine. Why?

Usually voltage drop over a long cable, a set too small for the pump’s starting current, or, on a single-phase pump, a failing start capacitor in its control box. We measure at the pump as well as at the generator to find which.

My inverter will not charge from the generator. Is the generator faulty?

Not always. The inverter may be rejecting a frequency or voltage outside its limits, often from a set whose speed or voltage wanders under load. We check the governor and AVR as part of a generator repair; the inverter’s own generator settings belong to your solar installer.

Do you cover Daveyton, Etwatwa and the estates around the lakes?

Yes, all of Benoni, from estate standby sets to petrol units in Daveyton and Etwatwa, as well as Boksburg, Springs and the rest of Ekurhuleni. For a set that must never fail, a maintenance plan keeps it tested between outages.
