On-Site Generator Repairs and Maintenance in Midrand
We repair, service and maintain generators on site throughout Midrand: critical standby at data and telecoms facilities, building sets in the office parks of Waterfall and Halfway House, warehouse generators along the N1, and home and borehole sets in Kyalami, Carlswald and Glen Austin. A technician comes to you, finds the fault and quotes before any work starts.

Critical standby
When the UPS has only minutes to spare
At a data or telecoms site the UPS carries the load the moment the mains fails, but only until its batteries run down. In that window the generator must start, reach speed, settle its voltage and take the load, every time. A slow crank on a tired battery or overlong start and warm-up timers eat into the margin the site was designed around.
The UPS must also accept the generator’s power. If the frequency drifts or the voltage swings outside its input limits as loads step on, it can stay on battery or refuse to synchronise its bypass, so a sluggish governor or a weak AVR can drain the batteries with the engine running. The distorted current a rectifier draws can also unsettle an AVR powered from the main output, which is why sets feeding large UPS loads are often fitted with a permanent magnet generator (PMG) to power the AVR. We trace this under load: actuator and governor response, AVR settings and sensing, and synchronising and load sharing on paralleled sets.

How a visit works at a business park or secure site
- 01
Access arranged first
Tell us the gate procedure, any induction or permit to work, and the change-control window.
- 02
Checks on standby
Battery, charger, fluid levels with the engine cold and the controller’s event log, before anything is switched over.
- 03
Service or repair
Oil, filters and coolant at the engine maker’s intervals, or the repair you called us for, with parts quoted before they are fitted.
- 04
Test and transfer, where allowed
A run on load or a simulated outage, booked out of hours if needed, proves the set takes the load through the ATS and hands it back cleanly.
Outages, light loads and long runs
Midrand falls under the City of Johannesburg, but its power does not all come from one supplier: some suburbs are on the municipal network and others are supplied directly by Eskom, so a business park and the estate across the road may lose power at different times. The harder test is the unplanned outage after cable theft, a substation fault or a summer thunderstorm, when a set used to two- or four-hour slots may have to run through the night and its fuel, cooling and battery charger are pushed hardest.
Office parks often have the opposite problem. A set sized for the whole building may carry only security lighting and servers after hours, and a lightly loaded diesel never gets hot enough to burn its fuel completely: wet stacking. Regular runs at a proper load, and a maintenance plan that tracks running hours as well as dates, keep it in check.
Midrand sits in our Johannesburg service region, with Fourways and Sandton to the south-west and south, Centurion across the Tshwane boundary to the north and Kempton Park to the east. When you book, send the make and kVA of the set and a photo of the controller screen.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do you maintain generators at data and telecoms sites in Midrand?
Yes: paralleled sets, ATS and controller faults, planned maintenance and tests under load. Tell us about inductions and change-control windows when you book.
Our UPS will not accept power from the generator. What is wrong?
Usually the frequency or voltage moves outside the limits the UPS accepts as load steps on or off. A sticking actuator, a governor needing adjustment, a failing AVR or an undersized set are the usual causes. We fix the generator side; the UPS’s own input settings are best changed by its supplier. See frequency and speed problems.
Our warehouse generator trips when the conveyors start. Why?
Motors draw several times their running current as they start. If several start together, or the set is near its limit, the voltage dips and the protection trips. See shutting down or tripping.
Do you cover the holdings in Glen Austin and Blue Hills?
Yes. Sets there run boreholes, stables and outbuildings and often stand unused between outages, so we look at the air filter, the stored diesel and the water separator as well as how the set copes with the pump starting. Send a location pin when you book.
