From gold-reef town to regional centre
Krugersdorp was founded on the gold reef in the late 1880s and grew into the main town of the West Rand. Today it is the seat of Mogale City and a regional centre: people from Kagiso, Munsieville, Azaadville and the farms to the north come in for shops, offices, schools, hospitals and municipal services. Most of the mines have closed, but the old mine land, the industrial areas of Chamdor and Factoria and the suburbs on the ridges all come from that history.

Storm season on the ridges
Krugersdorp’s summer thunderstorms bring plenty of lightning, and a strike nearby can push a surge in along the mains, the changeover wiring and the controller’s sensing cables. Controllers, AVRs and battery chargers take most of the damage, and the fault often stays hidden until the next outage.
