Generator Repairs for Fourways Homes, Estates and Complexes

We repair and service generators on site across Fourways, from home standby sets in Dainfern, Fourways Gardens and Cedar Lakes to the communal generators of townhouse complexes in Lonehill, Craigavon and Broadacres. We also look after borehole sets on Chartwell smallholdings and the generators behind shops, restaurants and offices around Fourways Mall and Riversands.

Who we work for

Where Fourways generators do their work

Fourways is mostly residential, built out in estates and complexes around a busy retail and office core, and that mix decides which generators we see.

A checklist for body corporate generators

A complex generator belongs to everyone, so nobody notices a failed charger or a low tank until the gate will not open in an outage. Trustees and managing agents can use this list.

  • One person is responsible for the generator, and the guardhouse knows who to call.
  • The controller is put back in automatic, not manual or off, after every test or service.
  • The set is test-run regularly, carrying the gate, lights and pumps rather than idling.
  • The battery charger light is on, and the battery is replaced on its condition, not after it fails.
  • The tank is refilled after long outages, with a record of who ordered the diesel.
  • It is serviced at least yearly, or sooner if load shedding has added many running hours.

We can put a complex generator on a maintenance plan and arrange access through the managing agent or estate office.

Estate homes

Noise, airflow and access in the estates

Many Fourways estates have rules on where a generator may stand and how loud it may be. A silent canopy stays quiet only while its door seals, acoustic lining and exhaust silencer are intact, so a set that has grown louder usually needs a repair, not more patience from the neighbours.

Placement causes the other common fault. A set boxed into a narrow passage can draw back in the hot air its radiator has just blown out and overheat on long summer runs, so we check the airflow path as well as the radiator and fan. Send the estate’s access procedure when you book so the technician can be cleared at the gate.

Generators alongside solar and inverters

Many Fourways homes now have solar panels and a battery inverter, with a generator kept for outages that outlast the batteries. The inverter starts the generator through a relay contact and then draws on it to run the house and recharge the batteries, a large, steady load for a small set.

Inverters also disconnect from a supply whose frequency or voltage wanders. When yours keeps dropping the generator, the cause is usually a governor that hunts, an AVR that drifts, or a set too small for the charge current the inverter draws. We test the generator under load, check the start wiring and fix the generator side; changes to the inverter’s settings are best made with your installer. See frequency and speed problems.

Power cuts in Fourways

Which load-shedding schedule a Fourways property follows depends on who supplies it: some suburbs are on the municipal network and others are supplied directly by Eskom, so two estates a few streets apart can lose power at different times. Cable theft, substation faults and summer storms bring longer outages, and lightning surges can damage controllers, AVRs and battery chargers even on a set standing idle.

If your generator did not start in the last outage, or started but never took the load, book a repair before the next one. Fourways is part of our Johannesburg service region, and we also cover neighbouring Sandton, Randburg and Midrand.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you service the generator for our complex or estate?

Yes. We arrange access through the trustees, managing agent or estate office, service the set and check that the gate, guardhouse and common circuits run on it.

Our complex generator ran out of diesel. Will it start once refilled?

Not always. On many diesel engines air enters the fuel system when the tank runs dry and must be bled out, and sediment drawn from the tank bottom can block the filters. If it will not start after refuelling, call us rather than cranking the battery flat.

Do you work on smallholdings in Chartwell?

Yes. Tell us what the set runs and how far the cable goes to the pump. Over a long run the voltage sags, and a borehole pump’s starting current can then trip a set that looks big enough on paper.

Can you install a changeover for my Fourways home?

Yes. A changeover lets a generator supply your chosen circuits safely, without back-feeding the mains. See generator installation.
