Generators we work on in City Deep
Cold stores and warehouses: Industrial generator services
Three-phase sets near the M2, N17 and N3 carrying refrigeration compressors through the whole outage.
Container and transport yards: Diesel generators
Yard sets around the inland port running the gate, floodlights and offices, breathing truck-yard dust.
Fresh produce traders: Voltage problems
Cold rooms around the Joburg Market, where stock spoils if the set cannot take the compressors.
Manufacturing plants: Shutting down or tripping
Factory sets carrying motor loads, tripped when the biggest machine starts direct-on-line.
Workshops and engineering firms: kVA sizing guide
Compressors, welders and machine tools in Denver and Cleveland on sets sized for a smaller shop.
Light industry in Benrose: Commercial generator services
Units beside Jeppestown and Belgravia, with smaller canopied sets behind the roller doors.
Repairs
Generator faults we fix in City Deep
Fuel and injector faults: Fuel system repairs
Contaminated diesel, blocked filters, air in the lines, lift pumps and injectors.
Overheating
Shutdowns from blocked radiators, failed fans, thermostats and coolant leaks.
AVR and voltage faults: Voltage problems
Low, high or swinging voltage from the AVR, exciter or rotating diodes.
ATS and changeover problems
The set runs but the building stays dark, or the load never returns to the mains.
Battery and charging faults: Battery not charging
Chargers, charge alternators and batteries that cannot crank the set when the mains fails.
Control panel errors: Control panel repairs
Alarms, lockouts and wiring faults on DSE, ComAp, SmartGen and other controllers.
Local conditions
Bulk fuel, yard dust and motor loads
A City Deep set earns its keep in a long outage under a cold store or yard: full load for hours, fed from a bulk tank or drums topped up between slots. Each top-up can carry water in, so we sample the tank before touching the injectors.
Truck-yard dust packs the radiator, and a set that ran all winter overheats on the first hot afternoon. Motor loads are the third local fault: a compressor started direct-on-line draws several times its running current, and a set near its limit lets the voltage dip until the protection opens.
- Tank and drums sampled before any injector work
- Radiator cores and air filter cleared of dust
- Starting current measured against the kVA

Response
On site in City Deep in 1–2 hours
Technicians on site in 1–2 hours, 24/7. The warehouses and yards sit near the M2, N17 and N3, Cleveland and Denver come off the M2, N3 or Main Reef Road, and Benrose lies beside Jeppestown, so a technician takes whichever is moving. Tell us the gate and whether the yard needs an induction or permit.
Until we arrive, check only what is safe: the tank gauge, emergency stop, main breaker and controller screen; the changeover and fuel lines wait for the technician, and stop after two presses of start. WhatsApp the screen, nameplate and hour meter so the right parts travel with us; emergency generator repair explains a night call.
Every make
Which makes we repair most in City Deep
We Service & Repair All Generator Brands. The cold stores, yards and factories mostly run three-phase sets on Cummins, Perkins, Deutz or John Deere engines with Stamford or Mecc Alte alternators and Deep Sea Electronics or ComAp controllers; the Benrose units and workshops run smaller silent diesels from Kipor, Bundu Power or Pramac on SmartGen modules. Photograph both plates for us; each make has its own brand page.
Prevention
Repeat breakdowns in City Deep, and what stops them
A yard calls twice when the repair treats the symptom: new filters block within weeks because the bulk tank was never drained, a replacement AVR fails under the same unbalanced phases, a radiator cleaned once chokes again by spring. The write-up names what will stop it next.
Those causes are what servicing removes. Our City Deep generator service and maintenance page describes the visit at a cold store, yard or Denver workshop, why a month of outages pulls the next service forward, and the plans for plant managers. How a fault is traced is on generator repairs; the same technicians cover the Johannesburg CBD, Kensington and Bruma, Germiston and Heriotdale next door, and across Johannesburg.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Our cold store’s generator trips when the compressors restart after an outage. Why?
Compressors restarting together draw a heavy starting current, more than a set near its limit can supply without the voltage collapsing. We measure the starting load and say whether staggered starts will cure it; see shutting down or tripping.
Can you work inside a container or transport yard that runs a permit system?
Yes. Send the gate’s requirements with the booking; the technician arrives with identification and the paperwork done, and keeps to the permit window.
We keep diesel in a bulk tank and top up from drums. Is that behind our fuel faults?
Often. Every top-up can bring water and dirt in, condensation adds more, and eventually the separator passes water on. We sample and drain before fitting parts; see diesel fuel contamination.
The set runs but the factory floor stays dark. What has failed?
Usually the changeover: a contactor that never pulled in, mains sensing that thinks the supply is back, or the generator-side breaker tripped on the first motor start. It is a technician’s job; see changeover faults.
