Why the capital depends on standby power

Pretoria is South Africa’s administrative capital, home to the national government departments and most foreign embassies, so much of its standby power sits behind security fences: at ministries and departmental offices around Arcadia and the CBD, at embassies and diplomatic residences in Brooklyn, Hatfield and Waterkloof, at public, military and private hospitals, and on university campuses. These sets can stand for weeks without carrying a load, yet on the day they are needed they must start, transfer and run for as long as the outage lasts.

The City of Tshwane is far bigger than Pretoria itself. It reaches from Soshanguve and Hammanskraal in the north to Centurion, a hub of its own, in the south, and east to Cullinan and Bronkhorstspruit, taking in suburbs, townships, factory districts, farms and smallholdings. Depending on the suburb, power comes from the City of Tshwane or directly from Eskom, so neighbouring areas can follow different load-shedding schedules. Unplanned outages after substation faults, cable theft and summer storms are a separate risk, and they rarely come with a warning or an end time.

So a Pretoria generator needs more than an oil change. The starting battery, kept up by its charger, must crank it first time, the diesel in the tank must be clean enough for a long run, the changeover must transfer in both directions, and the cooling system must cope with a hot afternoon. Generator servicing looks after the set itself, a maintenance plan adds scheduled test runs and records, and generator repairs deal with the faults in between.

Timeline with three lanes: mains, generator and the supply to the load. 1: the mains fails and a start delay ignores brief dips. 2: the generator starts and settles. 3: the load transfers to the generator. 4: the mains returns and a return delay checks it is stable. 5: the load transfers back to the mains. 6: the generator runs unloaded to cool down, then stops.

Controlled sites

Embassies, government buildings and hospitals

Work at a secure site starts before anyone arrives. Tell us the access procedure when you book: who meets the technician, what identification and vehicle details are needed, whether an escort is required, and any times when the set may not be stopped or tested. The visit is planned around those rules and around the hours when the building can tolerate a changeover.

At these sites the generator is one link in a chain: mains sensing, an automatic transfer switch (ATS) or changeover panel, the set itself, and often UPS systems for IT, security and medical equipment. Running the engine on its own proves little. A simulated mains failure, arranged with the site, shows whether the controller starts the set, the ATS transfers, voltage and frequency settle within what the UPS accepts, and the load returns cleanly to mains afterwards.

Larger buildings may run several sets in parallel through a synchronising panel. We work on the engine, alternator, AVR and controller, and report back to the facilities team on what was found and done.

  • Visits cleared in advance with the site
  • Mains-failure tests at times the site agrees
  • Control panel repairs on DSE, ComAp and SmartGen modules

Heat, jacarandas and generator cooling

Pretoria lies lower than Johannesburg and its summers are hotter, so generator cooling systems work harder here. A canopied set in a sunny side passage or a closed brick alcove breathes warm air, and a radiator that copes in winter can run hot when it carries a full load through a long summer outage.

Every October and November the jacarandas drop their flowers across the city, and leaves, seeds and dust follow through the rest of the year. They gather in canopy louvres and between radiator fins and cut the airflow until the set alarms or shuts down on high coolant temperature, often partway through a long outage. A service clears the air path and checks the fan belt, thermostat and coolant, then proves the set under load. Overheating explains the other causes, and coolant and radiator care covers what to watch between visits.

Diagram of a liquid cooling circuit. Hot coolant leaves the engine water jacket through the thermostat to the top of the radiator. The fan draws air through the radiator fins, carrying the heat away. Cooled coolant returns from the bottom of the radiator through the water pump to the engine. The expansion tank level should be checked only when the engine is cold.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which parts of Tshwane do you cover, and which page do I read?

All of it, on site. Find your part of the city in the table above, Pretoria Central, East, North, West or South, and open its page or go straight to your area. Centurion is a hub of its own. If you are not sure, send a location pin when you call.

Can you work at embassies, government buildings and hospitals?

Yes. Tell us the site’s security and access requirements when you book, including any escort, identification or permit to work, so the visit can be cleared in advance and any changeover test timed to suit the building.

Do you look after generators at factories in Rosslyn and Silverton?

Yes, from a single standby set to several sets on one site, including controllers, changeovers and synchronising panels. Tell us about inductions and production times when you book. See the Rosslyn and Silverton pages and industrial generator services.

Our generator overheats on hot afternoons. Is that normal?

No. A set that alarms or stops on coolant temperature in summer usually has blocked radiator fins or louvres, a slipping fan belt, low coolant, a sticking thermostat or poor airflow around the canopy. Let it cool, never open the radiator cap while it is hot, and call us. See overheating.

Does it matter whether our supply comes from the City of Tshwane or Eskom?

It decides which load-shedding schedule applies to you when load shedding is in force, and your electricity account shows which supplier you have. Unplanned outages from cable theft, substation faults or storms happen under either supply, so the generator should be ready to start at any time.

How quickly can a technician get to us?

Technicians on site in 1–2 hours. Free callouts and quotations. Send the make, kVA and a photo of the controller screen so we can bring the right parts.
