Derrick Avenue’s supermarkets, restaurants and traders, on petrol portables and small silent diesels behind the kitchens.
Shops and workshops on Jules Street: Industrial generator services
Malvern’s shops, motor workshops and light industry on the M14, where compressors load a small set hard.
Older houses on the hilly streets: Residential generator services

Flats, churches and schools: Standby generators
Shared sets for a gate, lights and pump, booked by the body corporate; hall sets that must start on Sunday.
Repairs
Generator faults we fix in Kensington and Bruma
Generator won’t start: Generator not starting
Flat batteries, failed chargers, stale fuel and starter faults, fixed on site.
Fuel and injector faults: Fuel system repairs
Contaminated diesel, blocked filters, air in the lines, lift pumps and injectors.
Battery and charging faults: Battery not charging
Chargers, charge alternators and batteries that cannot crank the set when the mains fails.
ATS and changeover problems
The set runs but the building stays dark, or the load never returns to the mains.
Overheating
Shutdowns from blocked radiators, failed fans, thermostats and coolant leaks.
AVR and voltage faults: Voltage problems
Low, high or swinging voltage from the AVR, exciter or rotating diodes.
Two streets
Derrick Avenue kitchens and Jules Street yards
Cyrildene’s restaurants trade through load shedding on small sets in back yards, and jerrycan petrol goes stale, so a gummed carburettor often darkens a kitchen. A portable stands outside, never in the kitchen, and feeds the building through a changeover, never a plug.
On Jules Street in Malvern the sets are bigger and work harder: a compressor started on a small diesel pulls the voltage down until the breaker opens, and drum diesel brings water and dirt to the filters.
- Carburettors cleaned, governors set
- Motor starting current checked against the set’s kVA
- Drum fuel sampled before the injectors are blamed

Response
On site in Kensington and Bruma in 1–2 hours
Technicians on site in 1–2 hours, 24/7. Bruma sits on the Bedfordview border close to the N3 Eastern Bypass and Malvern lies along Jules Street (the M14), so a technician comes in from either. Tell us where the set stands, shop yard, basement or steep side passage, and who opens the gate.
Until we arrive, check only the fuel level, main breaker, emergency stop and controller screen. Two tries of the start button, no more. WhatsApp a photo of the nameplate and panel so the likely parts come along; a night call goes through emergency generator repair.
Every make
Makes we repair in Kensington and Bruma
We Service & Repair All Generator Brands. Here that mostly means small sets: Ryobi and Honda-engined petrol portables at the restaurants and traders; silent diesels from Kipor, Bundu Power, Mac Afric and Lutian behind shops, at houses and flat-block gates, usually on SmartGen modules; and three-phase canopies on Perkins or Cummins engines with Stamford or Leroy-Somer alternators and Deep Sea Electronics controllers at the Jules Street workshops. Our brand pages and portable generators cover each.
Prevention
Why a set here fails twice, and what servicing changes
A second callout usually means the cause was left in place: a portable refilled from the same stale jerrycan, a charger still drifting over its new battery, a passage set smothered again by boxes. We clear the fault and list what else we found.
That is what servicing is for. Our Kensington and Bruma generator service and maintenance page covers the visit behind a Derrick Avenue kitchen, in a Jules Street yard or at an older house, and the plans for landlords, body corporates and homeowners. Generator repairs sets out how a fault is traced. The same technicians cover the Johannesburg CBD, Norwood and Orange Grove and City Deep next door, and the whole of Johannesburg.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can you repair the generator behind our Cyrildene restaurant while we trade?
Mostly, yes. We diagnose and repair with the kitchen on mains; the transfer test runs between sittings or after close.
Our portable petrol generator runs for a minute and dies. Why?
Usually fuel: petrol left in the carburettor goes stale and gums the jets; a blocked tank vent does the same. We clean and set up the carburettor on site; see petrol generators.
Our Jules Street workshop set trips when the compressor starts. Is it faulty?
Often it is small rather than faulty. A direct-on-line compressor draws far more current to start than to run, and a set near its rating sags until the breaker opens. We measure that start against the kVA; see shutting down or tripping.
Can you work on a set in a narrow side passage at an older Kensington house?
Yes. Most work happens through the service doors: say which side opens and clear the canopy, since a smothered set overheats.
