Generator Service & Maintenance in Chartwell for Plots, Yards and Venues
We service generators across Chartwell: borehole and house sets on the holdings, sets behind riding yards and plant nurseries, and standby supply at guesthouses and conference venues. Most stand idle for weeks and must then start first time, so a service proves the start as well as the engine.

Routine servicing in Chartwell
Borehole sets on smallholdings: Generator servicing
In an outage the set is the water supply. It stands for weeks, so battery, charger and fuel are checked and the pump start proved.
Riding yards: Generator maintenance
Horses need water and the yard needs lights; the visit falls on a quiet day, with dust cleared from radiator and filter.
Guesthouses, B&Bs and venues: Commercial generator services
Booked between check-out and the next arrival, or before a function, so the load run never reaches a guest.
Nurseries and agri-businesses: Industrial generator services
Three-phase sets behind irrigation, serviced by the hour meter in a busy season and run under their own motor loads.
Servicing
What a generator service in Chartwell includes
On a Chartwell plot the service begins by finding the set, often in a shed or pump house far from the house, and ends with a run that starts the borehole pump on generator power. Yard and arena dust earns the air filter and radiator a closer look.
- Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
- Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
- Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
- Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
- Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
- Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
- Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
- Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted
You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.
Intervals
How often a Chartwell generator needs servicing
| The set | How it runs on the holdings | What sets the next date |
|---|---|---|
| House and borehole set on a plot | How it runs on the holdingsEach outage, starting the pump whenever the tank calls | What sets the next dateUsually the calendar; the hours in a long load-shedding run |
| Riding-yard or nursery set | How it runs on the holdingsLights, water and pumps through every outage | What sets the next dateThe calendar, or hours in a growing season; air filter checked in dry months |
| Guesthouse or B&B set | How it runs on the holdingsRooms, kitchen and lights through evening outages | What sets the next dateHours after a heavy month, otherwise yearly before the busy season |
| Conference venue set | How it runs on the holdingsClose to full load during a function | What sets the next dateHours, with a load run before large bookings |
The service intervals guide works through the hour meter; wet stacking explains why a lightly loaded yard set needs a proper load run.

Guesthouse and venue plans: Commercial generator services
The changeover proved before peak bookings, services by hours after heavy months, and a written record for the owner and insurer.
Nursery and agri-business plans: Industrial generator services
Services by hour meter through the growing season, output checked under the irrigation load, and drum diesel sampled.

Prevention
What a Chartwell service catches before the outage does
Most repairs on the holdings give notice. A charger drifting high in a hot shed shows on the meter before the battery boils; a pump start that drags the voltage shows on the test run before the set trips with the trough empty; water in drum-filled diesel comes out at the drain, not through the injectors.
If the set has already stopped, the Chartwell generator repairs page covers the faults we see most and what to send us. We run the same plans in Fourways, Lanseria and Diepsloot, across Johannesburg North and the wider Johannesburg hub.
- Charger output metered at the battery
- Pump start run on generator power
- Drum and tank diesel checked for water

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Our generator mostly runs the borehole. How often does it need a service?
At least yearly, and sooner if the hour meter passes the engine manual’s interval. A set that starts the pump several times an outage works harder than its hours suggest, so our test includes the pump start.
Can you service the generator at our guesthouse without disturbing guests?
Yes. Engine work is done on mains; only the load run and changeover test switch over, so we book those between guests. We work 24/7.
We fill our generator from diesel drums kept in a shed. Does that matter?
It can. Drums collect condensation and sediment, which end up in the filters and injectors. Each service drains water from the tank; see diesel fuel contamination on storage.
Our riding yard is dusty. Does the generator need servicing more often?
The engine interval stays the manual’s, but the air filter and radiator need a look between services in dry months. A plan adds that visit before dust builds into an overheating shutdown.
