Generator Service & Maintenance in Johannesburg CBD, from Marshalltown to Hillbrow

Inner-city generators work hard: a tower system carries many tenants through every slot, a Hillbrow block’s set the lifts and booster pumps, a Braamfontein residence set each evening. We service and maintain them all, booked around the building and written up.

Servicing

What a generator service in Johannesburg CBD includes

Inner-city services seldom happen at ground level: we meet the caretaker, head for the basement or the roof, and keep to the window the building agrees; day tank, transfer pump, ventilation and exhaust get as much attention as the engine.

  • Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
  • Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
  • Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
  • Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
  • Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
  • Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
  • Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
  • Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted

You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.

Intervals

How often an inner-city generator needs a service

Hours or the calendar, whichever the manual reaches first, set the date, and inner-city hours arrive fast: every slot, plus the substation fault nobody scheduled.

Tower or bank-building systemHow it runs hereEvery daytime slot under lifts, lighting and server roomsWhen the service falls dueBy hours, within months, set by set
Block of flats with lifts and pumpsHow it runs hereEvery slot, day and night, with lift and pump startsWhen the service falls dueBy hours in a heavy quarter; charger checked between
Converted office blockHow it runs hereThe original set, now carrying flats, lifts and pumpsWhen the service falls dueBy hours, with the load measured against the rating
Campus or residence setHow it runs hereEvening slots in term, little over the holidaysWhen the service falls dueBy hours in term, by the calendar in the holidays
Shop or trader setHow it runs hereTrading-hours slots only, started by handWhen the service falls dueYearly at least, with fresh fuel and cleaned filters

Our service intervals guide reads the hour meter against the manual; wet stacking explains light running.

Illustration of one day with two power cuts of two and a half hours each, at 06:00 and 18:00, while the generator runs. That is 5 running hours a day, about 35 a week and about 150 a month, and 2 starts and changeovers a day, 14 a week and about 60 a month. A service measured in running hours falls due in months rather than a year, and every start works the battery, charger, starter and changeover. Illustration only: actual hours depend on the schedule, area and load.

Prevention

What an inner-city service catches before the outage does

A service finds inner-city faults in the order an outage would: the charger metered before it starves the battery, the day tank drained and its float switch worked by hand, and the changeover exercised with the mains still on. Whatever hesitates goes on the report instead of stopping the lifts.

When the set has already let the building down, the Johannesburg CBD generator repairs page covers the faults behind most inner-city callouts. These plans also run in Parktown and Houghton, Kensington and Bruma and Auckland Park and Melville, across Johannesburg and in every area we service.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you service our tower’s generators without the tenants noticing?

Mostly. The engine side, oil, filters, coolant, battery and fuel, stays in the plant room; tenants notice only the transfer test and loaded run, booked for the quietest hour the building allows. We work 24/7.

Our block’s set runs every slot. Is a yearly service enough?

Probably not. Two slots a day reach the hours interval in months, and every start works the battery and changeover. We date the service from the hour meter.

Does a converted office block need anything different at a service?

Yes: the load has changed. We measure what the flats, lifts and pumps draw against the rating, check the changeover still suits the installation, and say plainly if the set is now too small.

Our student residence is empty over the holidays. Should the set still run?

Yes, on a monthly test under some load: a standing set loses its battery, draws water into the diesel and lets the changeover stiffen. The holidays suit the full service.
