Who needs it
Routine servicing in Norwood and Orange Grove
Food shops and restaurants: Commercial generator services
Glenhazel’s kosher food shops and Grant Avenue kitchens run the set every slot under cold rooms; the hours mount fastest.
Care homes and medical rooms: Standby generators
Lifts, nurse call and fridges ride on the set; the service proves changeover and voltage, not only oil.
Synagogues, schools and halls: Battery not charging
Sets that run a few times a year must start unattended; battery, charger and fuel fail quietly.
Older homes and the motor trade: Residential generator services
Side-passage sets in Orange Grove, Orchards and Sydenham, and three-phase sets behind Louis Botha Avenue car dealers and workshops.
Servicing
What a generator service in Norwood and Orange Grove includes
A service here starts at a locked side gate or a shop’s back door, at the hour the owner or matron can give; in a passage, airflow and exhaust get as much attention as the oil.
- Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
- Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
- Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
- Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
- Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
- Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
- Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
- Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted
You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.
Intervals
When a set here is due a service
| Set | Duty here | Next service |
|---|---|---|
| Food shop or restaurant set | Duty hereEvery trading-hours slot, under cold rooms | Next serviceBy hours: a heavy month can use the interval |
| Care home or medical-room set | Duty hereEvery outage, day or night | Next serviceBy hours in a heavy quarter, changeover checked monthly |
| Synagogue, school or hall set | Duty hereA few times a year, mostly on test | Next serviceYearly at least: battery and diesel age standing still |
| Home set in a side passage | Duty hereOutages and a weekly test, lightly loaded | Next serviceYearly, with a loaded run against wet stacking |
Our service intervals guide reads the hour meter against the manual; wet stacking explains light running.
Plans
Maintenance plans for Norwood and Orange Grove
Shop and restaurant plans: Generator maintenance
For Louis Botha Avenue, Grant Avenue and Glenhazel: services by hour meter, fuel checked for water, the changeover tested before opening.
Care-home and medical plans: Load bank testing
For matrons and practice managers: a monthly loaded run, battery and charger metered between services, a report the insurer can read.
Community plans: Generator servicing
For a synagogue, church, school or hall: one quotation to the committee, test runs that prove unattended starts, a file the next committee inherits.
Home plans: Residential generator services
For a passage set that seldom runs: a service before the summer storms, airflow cleared, diesel checked for water.
Prevention
What a service catches before the outage does
Most repairs here would have been a line on a service report: a charger drifting high metered before it cooks a synagogue set’s battery, water under a restaurant’s diesel drained before the lift pump finds it, a care home’s hesitant contactor replaced by day, not at midnight.
If the set has already failed, our Norwood and Orange Grove generator repairs page covers the faults behind most callouts here and what to send before we arrive. The same plans run next door in Parktown and Houghton and Kensington and Bruma, across Johannesburg and in every area we service.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can you service the generator at our Glenhazel food shop before we open?
Yes. We work 24/7, so oil, filters, fuel and battery work is done before trading, and the changeover test, the only step that touches the tills and cold rooms, happens while the shop is empty.
Our synagogue’s generator runs a few times a year. Does it need a yearly service?
Yes. Standing still is harder on a set than running: the battery sulphates under a tired charger, condensation collects under the diesel and the changeover stiffens. A yearly service proves it will start unattended.
The care home’s set can never be out of action. How do you service it?
With the home on mains and the set isolated only as long as each task needs, then back in automatic. The loaded run is booked for a quiet hour and reception told when the lights will flicker.
Our set is wedged in a narrow side passage. Can you service it there?
Usually, if the doors open far enough to reach the filters and battery; if not, we say what must move. A canopy that cannot breathe overheats, and an exhaust under a window is unsafe.
