Generator Service & Maintenance in Florida, Booked Around the Site

We service and maintain Florida’s generators wherever they stand: side passages, the yards of blocks of flats, behind shops and medical rooms, on the campus and in Stormill’s workshops, each visit booked for the hour the site can spare and written up.

Routine servicing in Florida

Four kinds of Florida site and why each books a service.

Servicing

What a generator service in Florida includes

A Florida service happens in a side passage or a block’s yard as often as in a garden, so the technician checks how the set breathes before draining the oil, and the trustees get the booking and the report.

  • Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
  • Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
  • Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
  • Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
  • Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
  • Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
  • Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
  • Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted

You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.

Intervals

How often a Florida generator needs a service

Hours or calendar, whichever the engine manual reaches first: the set’s duty decides which. A month of back-to-back load-shedding slots can use up a workshop set’s hours interval, while a house set goes by the calendar.
How often a Florida generator needs a service
The setHow it runs in FloridaWhen the next service is due
House set in a side passageHow it runs in FloridaA few outages a year and a weekly testWhen the next service is dueYearly at least; the parts age regardless
Shared set at a block of flatsHow it runs in FloridaEvery outage, lightly loadedWhen the next service is dueYearly, with a run under real load
Shop, medical-room or campus setHow it runs in FloridaEvery working-day slotWhen the next service is dueBy hours in a heavy quarter, otherwise yearly
Workshop set in StormillHow it runs in FloridaEvery daytime slot, in dustWhen the next service is dueBy hours, often within months
Portable petrol set in FleurhofHow it runs in FloridaHours at a stretch in a long outageWhen the next service is dueEach season, with fresh petrol

The service intervals guide turns an hour-meter reading into a date; wet stacking covers light running.

Illustration of one day with two power cuts of two and a half hours each, at 06:00 and 18:00, while the generator runs. That is 5 running hours a day, about 35 a week and about 150 a month, and 2 starts and changeovers a day, 14 a week and about 60 a month. A service measured in running hours falls due in months rather than a year, and every start works the battery, charger, starter and changeover. Illustration only: actual hours depend on the schedule, area and load.

Prevention

What a Florida service catches before the outage does

Most Florida repairs show weeks earlier. A drifting charger at a block’s set shows on a meter long before the battery fails; water under a workshop’s drum diesel is drained before the lift pump finds it; passage dust is cleared from a radiator before the first hot afternoon; and a sticking changeover contactor is found on a test, not by a dark shop.

When a set has already stopped, the Florida generator repairs page describes the faults behind most callouts and what to photograph before we arrive. The same schedules run in neighbouring Roodepoort, Weltevreden Park and Industria and Crown Mines, across the Roodepoort hub and on the service index.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you service a generator in a narrow side passage without moving it?

Usually. Oil, filters, coolant and battery work need the service doors open, not the canopy out; if the passage is too tight even for that, we say so and discuss a plinth.

How often should a block of flats have its shared generator serviced?

At least yearly, sooner if load shedding reaches the hours interval first. Because it runs lightly loaded, each service ends with a run under real load, and the trustees get the report.

Can you service our Stormill workshop set without stopping the floor?

Yes. Everything but the loaded run and the changeover test happens with the workshop on mains, and those two go between shifts or over the lunch break. We work 24/7.

What does a service check at consulting rooms beyond oil and filters?

Voltage and frequency under the rooms’ own load, the AVR, the changeover and the battery. Fridges and electronic equipment object to swinging voltage first, so the loaded run is logged on the report.
